The Spaghetti and Meatball Players are proud to present The Commedia Little Mermaid!
Everyone's favorite band of vagabond actors, the Spaghetti and Meatball Players, have made the trek across the river for their 14th (mostly) annual summer at CCT! This time, they are putting their mark on Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale The Little Mermaid. Join Arlequino (Paul Lindley), Columbine (Liv Moody), Il Capitano (Charlie Krawczyk, Mandal Sims), Pantalone (Alex Malvern), and Rosetta (Sadie Carr) as this bumbling troupe attempts to tell a straightforward story while juggling Arlequino's chicanery and Il Capitano's legal regulations to keep them in good terms with "the Mouse."
With humor aimed at both parents and kids, improvisation, and plenty of slapstick, this adaptation may not be traditional, but is sure to be a favorite for all ages!
Commedia dell’arte, Italian for “comedy of the professional artists,” was a popular form of improvisational theatre that began in Italy in the 15th century and continued in its appeal for centuries. At that time, all performances were unscripted and held outdoors, with only simple props and no scenery. The influence of commedia dell’arte is evident in much of our contemporary comedy, most notably in the great commedia artists of the 20th century, the Marx Brothers and most recently with the rise of improvisational comedy shows such as Saturday Night Live and Whose Line is it Anyway. The stock “scenarios” acted out by the players are still evident in the plot lines of the current form of television sit-coms.
You have three opportunities to see The Commedia Little Mermaid at Richland Library Sandhills, Auditorium (763 Fashion Dr, Columbia, SC 29223)!
The Rock
I know what you're thinking - what could be more essential to any Little Mermaid production than the big rock that she jumps up on. Well hold onto your seat - because we have an exciting rock-related offer. As we tour The Commedia Little Mermaid, we're going to be hauling around this big rock - and for $100 - we'll put your logo on it.
At CCT we keep the prices of our services low so young peoples access to the power of live theatre won't limited by their financial situation. Your support will go directly to support that programming. This may be a commedia, but we're serious about arts access for young people, so we hope you'll support the next generation and add your logo to the rock!
